Other marine sectors

There are many different commercial marine sectors other than fishing and aquaculture, including ports, sea freight, gas and oil exploration and production, renewable energy and tourism. Possibly the most predictable impacts of climate change will be on the tourism sector.

Knowledge of the types of marine tourism / dive / charter fishing activities that occur within a region can help to determine the overall effects of climate change in your community. For example, climate impacts that affect the abundance of whales are likely to have larger consequences for the marine tourism (whale watching) industry than for commercial or recreational fisheries. If a large number of tourists visit your community to take part in whale watching, alterations to whale abundance may impact tourist accommodation and restaurants in addition to the tour operators.
